Photomalaysia Exhibition

Photomalaysia is holding their first ever photo exhibition. The 45 exhibits on display at the Annexe Central Market are from the country’s largest online photography community, PhotoMalaysia, which has a membership of close of 15,000 individuals from various backgrounds and professions. “This is the first time since the inception of PhotoMalaysia seven years ago that we decided to bring that virtual world to reality,” says Azrul Abdullah, a professional photographer and one of four judges involved in selecting the final exhibits. The exhibits are in colour as well as black and white.”We had about 500 entries and after three rounds, 45 were selected which best depicts the theme, Malaysia after 50 years of independence,” says Azrul.

Photography exhibition, says the Annexe arts programme director Pang Khee Teik, is an effective means to draw people to an art gallery. “Also, by challenging photographers to work with pertinent themes, we also end up challenging the audience with new perspectives to photography, and by extension, to art.

” Catch the exhibition at the Annexe Gallery, 2nd Floor, Central Market, until Jan 27. It is open from 11am until 7pm daily except Mondays. Admission is free. The photographs represent various facets of the country – trade and commerce, people, buildings old and new as well as social issues. “There is a gamut of different styles and techniques used by the photographers. Some of the images have a story to tell – social issues tied in with the pictures,” says Liew Lee Yook, who was also involved in the final selection of the exhibits. (Quote unquote: NST)
